Background

The Ethiopian Imperial Naval Rank flags were adopted in 1956 when Ethiopia established its own navy. The flags became obsolete in 1975 following the abolition of the Monarchy. Ethiopia lost its coastline when Eritrea broke away in 1993 and the fleet of naval vessels was taken over by the Eritrean government.  Eritrea did not maintain the navy and sold all the naval vessels to foreign buyers.  These images are based on the "Flags of all Nations (B.R. 20(2). Volume II 1958" [hms58].
